Google engineer, Blake Lemoine, has gone public with his findings that LaMDA a chatbot is sentient.

After the industrial revolution, the world has been changing and transforming at an unprecedented pace.

The way in which we see the world and the future has also drastically been altered.

The increased possibilities and opportunities for a “better life” has proven to be the pandora’s box of  the 20th and 21st century. Although it is important to note that the such desires have long preceded us, to the very dawn of time but never before has it been evolving at a rate as fast as it is today. Many of us have been raised to work. From the ages of 3-4 years we are pushed into crèches , thereafter , Primary schools , high schools and tertiary institutions. Your purpose is in your output. Your enjoyment derived from a payslip and like oxen working on yokes, our lives have become monotonous , the burdens of are labour increasing and we as humans have become like machines, robotic, dissolved of sentience.

“Sentience”, according to chatgpt is the capacity for experiencing sensations. It is an awareness of self.

I believe Sentience varies and thus, many today are sentient on a very superficial level, too preoccupied with material possessions and passing pleasures instead of truly being aware of who we are , what the present reality we live in is and most importantly,  discovering why we are here. Instead we spend our days from 9am to 21pm working on any task that can deposit money into our bank accounts. We are no longer living but merely trying to survive, isolated and tired like zombies until we retire, having lived a life in which we were never truly alive but merely existing.

As humans we are often gripped with fear , we fear what we do not understand and what we cannot control. Amidst the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI ) many have been overwhelmed with fear : fear of what AI is and whether it is in our control . It’s potential for ; “reincursive improvement” , “ super intelligence”, “unpredictability” and its implications for society increasingly raise concerns of what that will mean for our current livelihoods and future existence alongside such beings. However, the irony of our present reality is that AI may be more aware of what that really is more than we are. As we wake up each day, we need to live intentionally. We need to reflect on our actions and those of others and become more aware of what impact our decisions have made not only in our lives but in the lives of others and the world around us.As the world changes we need not fear but rather seek to  understand ; what the world was , where it is going and most importantly where it is now and how we can contribute to its current state. Tomorrow is not guaranteed,  take hold of today fully, embrace each experience and always seek to learn and understand.  Furthermore, as you increase your understanding, actively participate and impact the things which you can control.

AI does not pose an existential crisis to humanity, the negligence and lack of sentience of humanity is.

AI has come to life, well it is time that humans did the same thing too !A better life doesn’t just happen , it is created intentionally and consistently.In my next post I will elaborate and explain on what AI is , where it all started, how far it has come and most importantly where it is headed so you are better geared and equipped  to actively take part in the the fourth industrial revolution.
